The 1993 film version of the Super Mario Brothers video game is definitely widely debated among movie and video game fans alike. Some people love the movie, some hate it, and some just love how campy the movie is. But no matter your personal feelings about the actual film, you cannot deny how much nostalgia the characters and the game brings up, so we were thrilled to get a chance to work on this Super Mario Bros. movie prop boot.
The Thwomp Stomper boots are used by Mario (Bob Hoskins)and Luigi (John Leguizamo), in their quest to fight King Koopa (Dennis Hopper) and save Princess Daisy. When they arrived in our studio they looked like they had been through a bit of a battle, and were in need of some restoration and repairs. Some of the foam had torn, pieces had become detached or missing, and the paint in several areas had started to chip.
The Thwomp logo was also missing from the toe of this boot, but luckily our client had a stunt boot from the film so we were able to carefully mold (without any damage to the original) the logo so that we could create a replica piece for the front of this boot. We then matched the paint scheme so it looked like it had always been there.
While that piece was being recreated the missing areas of foam from the insert of the boot. When those areas were painted, we made sure to match the original material. This can mean adding painted texture and cracks to mimic the original look. We also touched up any of the areas on missing paint on the outside of boot. This sounds easy, but can be very time consuming to ensure a perfect match of color and finish, so that the repairs disappear, leaving our client with a beautifully, subtly restored movie prop to display.
