Stephen Colbert Fencing Mask for The Late Show
A custom Stephen Colbert fencing mask created for his duel with US Olympic fencer Ibtihaj Muhammad on The Late Show.
We recently had an amazing time creating our Sammy the Salmon puppet for a segment on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert. When they contacted us to create a custom Stephen Colbert fencing mask for an upcoming segment we were thrilled to get another chance to work with them again so soon.
On the August 5th episode, featuring Team USA fencer Ibtihaj Muhammad, who won bronze with the team at the Rio Summer Olympics this week, the always competitive host challenged the olympian to a duel! With only a few days lead time, the show overnighted us the fencing helmet Stephen would be wearing in the episode. Melissa Dooley, the lead artist on this project began with several reference photos of Stephen Colbert to help her capture his likeness. She then hand painted Stephen Colbert’s face on the mesh of the mask’s face shield. The mesh on the mask is actually fairly wide, making painting an accurate likeness a challenge, but Melissa did a wonderful job on it!
