Point Break Presidents Masks Display Busts
Custom display busts for a trio of movie prop Point Break presidents masks from the 1991 film production.
These Point Break presidents masks from the production of the cult classic where the surfing group of bank robbers led by Patrick Swayze were known as the “Ex Presidents.” The surfers used latex masks to conceal their identities during their bank robbing spree.
The masks arrived to our studio in very good condition showing only slight signs of cracking in areas that would be expected from latex masks of this age. Most were quite minor and our restoration artists went over each mask to repair/reinforce any of these problem areas before creating customs display busts for each. For this project it was not so much about restoration, but conservation. We wanted to make efforts to help keep these movie prop masks in the in good condition for as long as possible.
A large part of the conservation process was creating the custom foam inserts which would support the masks. Each latex mask has a custom 3-part insert (allowing the pieces to slide into the masks without causing unnecessary stretching or stress) that will help minimize sagging and cracking as time goes by. We finished the displays off with clear acrylic rods to raise each bust up and black acrylic bases for a sleek museum style display for these three latex classic movie masks!
