Before the iconic biker jacket of T2, Judgement Day, the 1984 original film made its own mark with its truly unique “punk” jacket worn throughout the film by Arnold Schwarzenegger. Our client was an old prop collecting friend of Tom’s – Ryan Condal. Condal’s known as the showrunner for the Game of Thrones prequel, House of the Dragon, but to our fans, he’s obviously much more famous… perhaps infamous… as the cohost of the Stuff Dreams are Made of Prop Podcast with his cohost writer/collector David Mandel! You may have even seen this amazing jacket on display in the background of one of the video podcasts on the show’s youtube channel (check it out and like and subscribe!). You’ll love the show and you may even catch Tom on a few episodes!
Arnold was never your average actor and at the time of Terminator in 1984, his unique physique was legendary. To put a jacket he wore on a standard mannequin would look like a kid going to work in his father’s clothes. A customized form was crafted in fiberglass, with enlarged chest, expanded back and very specific widening of the shoulders. It took a bit of back and forth to work out the right size so that we matched Arnold’s scale, but also so that the wardrobe would drape right and look amazing.
A single black post and simple laminate black wood base ground the display and get out of the way visually. The form itself was made headless so as no to distract from the costume jacket, but with just enough neck to hold the classic 80’s popped collar in place. The finished display is a great tribute to an icon of the era and a film that launched a franchise!
