We were contacted by the Detectives’ Endowment Association Inc. who were looking for a custom tribute bust of the late Steven McDonald, who they would be renaming their humanitarian award after. Our studio is located in New York so we were very familiar with Officer McDonald’s inspirational story and we were very honored to help create this tribute to him.
Lead sculptor on this project Steven Richter, began with reference photos to help him get a sense of Officer McDonald’s facial features. We were fortunate enough to get to work with several people who knew him best to ensure that we captured his essence and that it looked as they remembered him. At approximately 10.5″ tall, this scaled bust sculpture is substantial, yet not overly large the way a life-sized bust might be.
With the blessing of his family and pastor, we completed the clay sculpture and molded the piece to capture Steven’s look and spirit for reproduction. Each copy of the award is created in resin, which is then finished with a faux bronze paint treatment so that each statue looked like it was cast in real bronze. A gloss top coat gives it a polished look and we finished them with a mahogany base, to which they could attach the recipients’ plaques.
We were truly honored to be a part of this project, and send our thanks to the Detective’s Endowment Association and, of course, Steven’s family and friends for allowing us to honor and remember him in this special way!
