We were contacted by Ralph Larry Roberts’ family who were looking for a very special gift for him. They wanted to commission a bronze bust sculpture to honor him. Our challenge with this sculpture was the fact that it was a surprise, which meant we couldn’t just ask him to sit for a series of photos. We worked closely with his family to get as many photos as possible because the more photos we have, the more closely we can capture our subject’s likeness and spirit in the final bust.
We worked closely with our clients throughout the sculpting process to make sure they were happy with the look of the statue, sending photos of the clay sculpture in progress and getting feedback and notes. Once the sculpture was finished, and had been approved by the client, we moved on to the molding process. Although many of our bronze busts are created with a faux bronze finish, this time our clients decided to go with two actual bronze statues and one faux bronze sculpture.
Once the mold as finished and we cast up one bust that would be finished in faux bronze, we then sent the mold to the foundry where they used a lost wax method to create a pair of real bronze copies of our sculpture. The real bronze is ideal for outdoor display, and the faux bronze (resin) copy is wonderful for indoors, or where budget or weight are concerns. The pics show that Ralph loved the bust and we’re so glad we got to be a part of this great surprise gift!
