When we were approached to come up with a unique display for an original Mr. Stay Puft Marshmallow Man Head we jumped at the chance. A brilliantly funny film complimented by brilliant practical effects, Ghostbusters brought the Marshmallow Man to life in classic fashion via props, costumes and animatronics.
The foam latex skin of this prop Marshmallow Man head had been removed years before it arrived at our NY studio. When it arrived, all that remained was the mechanical underskull. That alone was an impressive piece of history in its own right and a wonderful glimpse at the hard work behind the scenes that went into bringing the classic movie scenes to life.
After discussions with the client, we suggested that adding a 1/2 face to the prop would give it some context (immediately bringing to mind how it looked in the film) while still showcasing the incredible underskull and maintaining this original film prop’s integrity. We liked the idea of being sure the element of this movie prop restoration/display that was screen used, remained visible (even if only 1/2 so!)
Tom Spina and Mike Thomas worked together on the build. Tom carefully created a partial mold of the undeskull (using layers of barrier to ensure the valuable movie prop was unharmed). Mike then used a casting of that as a sculpting armature to create the face sculpture. The Stay Puft Marshmallow Man head came to life in clay, and using our molded armature, the new sculpture would perfectly match the original and properly fit the underskull
The finished display is a side-by-side of “as seen on screen” and “behind the scenes movie magic”. It’s immediately recognizable to anyone who’s seen the film yet the original prop remains and shines through!
